  2. For all you who have asked about mods for the DX440, here is the mod for the
  3. DX440/Sangean ATS803a that gets rid of the "chuff" as the radio scans
  4. through different frequencies. This is a transcript from one of the $
  5. services.
  6.  
  7. The anti-chuffing mod is VERY easy and well worth it. I especially like
  8. hearing the freqs being scanned when in scan mode, because sometimes the
  9. scan will miss something. Also, as someone previously suggested, I didn't
  10. unsolder the jumper, but just bent the 2nd wire of the ribbon cable out of
  11. the socket on the main pcb. Believe me,  ANYONE can do this, and there is no
  12. need for a soldering iron, just a  screwdriver and 5 minutes. To those of
  13. you who didnt see the description of  this before, here is how to do it:

  15. 1.  Set the radio face down, unscrew the 6 screws holding the case together
  16. and take off the case.
  17.  
  18. 2.  Locate the 6 wire ribbon wire connecting the two PC boards and follow it
  19. to the left, untill it goes into the connector on the main board.
  20.  
  21. 3.  Gently pull the ribbon cable from the connector, and bend the second
  22. wire from the left at a right angle to the cable.
  23.  
  24. 4.  Carefully reinsert the ribbon cable into the connector, making sure
  25. that the 2nd wire from the left doesnt go into its socket.

  27. 5.  Put the case back on, screw the 6 screws back in, and turn on the
  28. radio, noting the lack of the annoying 'chuff' between frequency changes!

  35. I did this on my 803a and it works famously.  Let me add that it's a 10 wire
  36. cable, not a 6 wire cable.  It makes a right angle bend as it goes from one
  37. circuit board to the other.  And I made sure I folded the wire end up toward
  38. the
  39.  
  40. top of the radio; this was away from the connector, so that random shaking
  41. wouldn't cause the folded end to make connection again or to short out another
  42. connection.  You'll see immediately what I'm talking about.
